Call to Improve Water Supply in Derbat – East Jebel Marra”

Derbat – March 5, 2026

A water well in the Derbat area of East Jebel Marra is facing serious challenges due to water shortages and weak infrastructure, prompting residents to call for practical solutions to improve water supply and ensure safe water for daily use.

Speaking to Sudan Sawa Sawa, Mohamed Abdullah said: “I displaced with his family of ten from the city of El Fasher in North Darfur about three years ago due to the war. I currently work in water distribution to support my family. I visit the well daily and pay the owner a weekly fee of 2,000 Sudanese pounds in order to work there, selling a jerrycan of water for 500 pounds to cafés and restaurants. I call for the provision of a water pump, as well as the construction and proper covering of the well and the supply of water tanks, noting that such measures would reduce physical effort and improve the distribution process”.

In a related development, a woman identified as Halima Abdalmajid, a mother of ten children, said obtaining water has become a daily burden for families, as she must travel long distances to reach the well. She added that water availability has declined in recent days. She stressed that providing water storage tanks would help ease the daily hardship faced by residents.

Sudan Sawa Sawa also observed that the well, which local residents rely on for drinking water, lacks adequate protection. It remains uncovered, allowing insects and animals to enter, which could affect the safety and quality of the water.

One resident called on relevant authorities and organizations inside and outside Sudan to prioritize the development of water sources in the area by protecting wells and providing the necessary equipment to manage water in a safe and sustainable manner, helping to improve living conditions and ensure access to clean drinking water.
