“Killing of a Young Man in Armed Attack on a Trading Convoy in Wadi Turu, Central Darfur”

Eighteen-year-old Abbas Abu Al-Qasim was killed in an armed attack targeting a trading convoy in the Wadi Turu area of Central Darfur, as it was traveling from the city of El Geneina to the Joldo area west of Jebel Marra. The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing security challenges facing road travel in the region.
According to local sources who spoke to “Sudan Sawa Sawa,” the convoy ( truck) was transporting goods and several traders aboard a truck owned by a member of the Arab communities.Witnesses reported that two armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on the truck, striking the young man with multiple gunshots. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses added that the truck driver, who was armed, returned fire, prompting the attackers to flee and abandon their motorcycle at the scene.
Despite the attack, the convoy continued its journey and eventually reached Joldo, where the injured received medical treatment. The burial ceremony was postponed, pending the arrival of the victim’s family.
The incident comes amid persistent security challenges affecting trade routes and movement between towns and villages across Darfur, negatively impacting livelihoods and the stability of local communities.
Activists and community leaders in the area have stressed the importance of strengthening coordination between local authorities and communities to secure trade routes by increasing patrols, activating early warning mechanisms, and supporting community protection initiatives.
Observers believe that addressing such incidents requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond security responses alone. It must also include support for economic stability and efforts to build trust among local communities, contributing to the protection of civilians and ensuring the safe and sustainable flow of trade.
