“Mertal Area in East Jebel Marra: Community Efforts Sustain Education Despite Limited Infrastructure”
Mertal area, an administrative unit located in East Jebel Marra about 23 kilometers southwest of Tawila in North Darfur, faces significant challenges in the education sector. At the same time, local initiatives are working to ensure the continuity of learning despite these constraints.
The area has only one main school, known as Al-Kifah School, which provides both primary and intermediate education. The school consists of 12 classrooms, six of which are permanent structures, while the remaining six have been built using local materials due to limited resources and funding.
In an effort to ease the growing pressure on the main school, the local community has established three satellite schools in different locations. These aim to reduce overcrowding and improve access to education, particularly for children living in remote villages.
These community-driven initiatives reflect a growing awareness of the importance of education despite ongoing challenges related to infrastructure and limited support. Residents hope that increased government involvement and partnerships with organizations will help improve school conditions by upgrading classrooms and creating a more stable and higher-quality learning environment.
Under these circumstances, Mertal stands as a model of community resilience, demonstrating a strong commitment to the right to education and a determination to find practical solutions to ensure its continuity for future generations.
